The Straw Cottage

Straw Bale Cottage in Wales, Powys, Llandrindod Wells

Description

The Straw Cottage is truly a different type of holiday. It offers the romance of a bygone era with 2017 comfort. No electric or modern gadgets but wake up to the sound of birdsong, breakfast outside with just the sound of Holly Brook and the hills for company. Come for a special break for just the two of you, stars, champagne and total peace. Or if you are bringing the family, see your children experience a different kind of enjoyment in discovering the pleasures of messing about in the stream, seeing the farm animals and making their own entertainment.

Staying in The Straw Cottage is a memorable experience, away from the modern world, no modern gadgets, no electrics, nature at the door, views, dark skies, stars, sitting around the barbeque, de-stressing and relaxing. However we think that you will appreciate the comfort – sleep in a lovely comfy bed, have a shower, be warm and cosy if the weather is not ideal.
The cottage has been built using centuries old building methods. The walls are made of straw bales, and then coated with lime mortar inside and out. The roof insulation is sheep’s wool and the roof is covered with cedar shingles. Inside, the cottage has two double bedrooms, one has twin beds, and the other has a double bed. There is a shower and a normal flushing W.C. in the bathroom.

A large sitting room with wood burner leads out onto the veranda. There is a kitchen area with sink with hot and cold water, double hob burner and gas cool box. Heating comes from the wood burner, hot water, cooking is by gas. Lighting is by lanterns, candles, solar and torches. Close by the cottage is a barbeque pit and a slightly further away is a place to have a bonfire, roasted marshmallows on a stick or cooked spuds in the cinders?

The cottage sits on the edge of Ben’s Wood, a small wood that has been coppiced so it is light and airy with dappled sun and bluebells in the spring time. In front of the cottage the ground gently slopes down to the field and the stream, with views to the far hills. In the wood are several bird boxes, home to a variety of birds including woodpeckers, tree creepers and blue tits.

If you have children, there are endless things for them to enjoy – messing about in the stream, pond dipping, identifying the flowers and birds, seeing the farm livestock, or just playing in the wood using the trees and rope swings and making their own fun. In front of the lodge is a large flat area of field, plenty big enough for a game of cricket or rounders (don’t hit your ball into the stream!). The farm lane is very quiet; rarely do we see a car, so they can ride their bikes without the worry of traffic. You might choose to wander around the farm or go for a more energetic walk across the hills and far away or perhaps just sit outside to snooze and read. The night time is dark, you can see the moon and stars far away from any light pollution.
We offer 3 or 4 night breaks over Christmas and the New Year period to fit in with the Christmas holiday dates, please contact owner for more details.

Come into Llandrindod Wells, go past the Metropole Hotel (large green hotel on your left), take the first turning left past the Metropole, signposted The Lake. Almost as soon as your turn left, turn right between the chemists and the Automobile Palace. Follow that road out past the lake to a T junction. Turn left, go up hill past golf course, round bad bend, past bungalows on your left, keep going for about 1/4 mile and then follow the road as it bends sharply to the right (do not take the road in front which has a no through road sign). Look for the finger post that says Ty Gwyn Farm. Follow the lane and go through a metal gate (normally open), down the hill to a black gate, turn in just through the black gate into the yard. Continue up into the courtyard and we will take you down to the Straw Cottage.
Ty Gwyn Farm is the only farm on the right after the golf course. Don't go into Ty Gwyn Bach, which is well before you come to us.

From the South via A483 from Builth Wells.

As you come into Llandrindod Wells you pass the garage on your right, then you come to a wide right hand turn opposite the old Grosvenor Bakery signposted The Lake and Golf Course. Take that right turn and go out past the lake and up hill past golf course, round bad bend, past bungalows on your left, keep going for about 1/4 mile and then follow the road as it bends sharply to the right (do not take the road in front which has a no through road sign). Look for the finger post that says Ty Gwyn Farm. Follow the lane and go through a metal gate,(normally open) down the hill to a black gate, turn in just through the black gate into the yard. Continue up into the courtyard and we will take you down to the Straw Cottage.

Ty Gwyn Farm is the only farm on the right after the golf course. Don't go into Ty Gwyn Bach, which is well before you come to us.

Ty Gwyn Farm is about 2.5 miles from Llandrindod Wells.

Beware if using SATNAV as it often takes you to the bungalows instead!

Area

Radnorshire is one of the old counties, which together with Brecknockshire and Montgomeryshire make up the county of Powys in Mid Wales. Radnorshire is a county of rolling hills with river valleys, farmsteads, quiet country lanes and historic market towns. There is something for everyone to enjoy, the spectacular Elan Valley with its amazing dams, Offa’s Dyke and Glyndwr’s Way together with footpaths and bridleways and open hill make for wonderful scenic walking. A beautiful Victorian town built to accommodate visitors taking the spa waters. Llandrindod Wells still retains its magnificent buildings many of which surround the Temple Gardens. Within the town there are supermarkets, local food shops, a Victorian theatre, gift shops, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs. The 13 acre lake is a particular feature with a magnificent dragon fountain in the middle. Close by there is Abbey Cwm Hir Hall, the National Cycle Museum and a variety of open gardens and places to visit. Hay on Wye has the internationally renowned Literary Festival in May but is well worth a visit year round for its second hand bookshops, good shopping and cafés and restaurants.Builth Wells, Kington, Knighton and Presteigne are all small local towns each with its own individual style. They all have local shops as well as some of the larger chains and supermarkets. If eating out is your pleasure, then there are pubs and restaurants to suit every taste and pocket. Throughout the year there are events and activities from the world famous Royal Welsh Show in June and the Hay Festival to local agricultural shows, festivals, trotting races, ploughing matches and fetes and fairs. Travelling around Radnorshire is easy, the “A” roads are wide and mainly quiet and once off the main roads you can explore the many small lanes and byways that take you to the hidden parts of Radnorshire.

#65. A Wonderful Breakaway

It was a wonderful breakaway from the hustle and chaos of everyday life. No electricity took us away from the beck and call of technology and being outside for three days, paddling the stream, lighting a bonfire and playing on the rope swing made for an idyllic few days away. We had one day of sunshine and couple of grey days but it mattered not, the cottage was brilliantly kitted out, the owners have worked hard to think of all the things that you might need to help switch off and slow down. Books, toys, fishing nets, plethora of games for kids and adults and hundreds of candles enhanced the feeling of peace and switching off. Our children loved it and although we have only been back for two days, our 3 year old has not stopped telling everyone (strangers included) about our holiday. A wonderful space and place for important family time. Thanks Margot.

#64. We loved it

We loved it here at The Straw Cottage, everything about it was great! The treasure hunt was fab! We really enjoyed fishing in the stream and spotting insects. We went cycling in the Elan Valley and the views were stunning and the ride good fun. Thank you Margot for having us here and making us feel so welcome. P.S. It was really fun having no electricity. It got so dark!

#63. We all loved the Straw Cottage

Thank you for a glorious long weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the south east. We all loved the Straw Cottage - so brilliantly thought out in every detail and so inviting, not to mention the welcoming flowers and scones! The surrounding area is spectacular too. We enjoyed the Elan reservoir so much as well as local walks around the farm and to Howey and Llandrindod Wells. Thank you again and hope to be back before too long.

What a wonderful hidden gem the Straw Cottage is! We have all had a really relaxing break and the children have spent many happy hours playing and exploring the woods and stream. Lots of toasting marshmallows by campfire and ghost stories too! The children loved the treasure hunt -thank you for the treasure! It has been lovely to see them enjoying nature without missing technology. We will certainly be recommending the Straw Cottage to friends -many thanks for a lovely break.

We have had a wonderful few days here at the Straw Cottage. Jess loved the stream and the swing and all the sheep. So great to switch off all devices and just mooch about. Really missed not having our older daughter with us- we hope to bring her soon. Thank you very much. We loved all the dams at Elan, will all come back to see them in the winter with the water flowing through.

#58. We have had a lovely time

We have had a lovely time, had some gorgeous, relaxed sunny days. Our favourite day was a bike ride around Elan Valley reservoir and a picnic, such breathtaking views. Our son has enjoyed every moment of this holiday and was very cosy in his bed after busy days. It's a shame we did not get to meet the owners as they were away but Margaret looked after us. Thank you for Henry's treasure and for a lovely well equipped cottage.

Dear Straw Cottage. I wish this could be my home. Thank you. Love from Ava and Layla.
Thank you for a wonderful holiday, this cottage is beautiful and peaceful, the girls had a wonderful time, thank you for the bonfire pit. We had a fantastic evening and the treasure hunt, it really was the best holiday ever.

No phones, no TV, no internet,no endless social media - total silence, complete relaxation and gorgeous weather. We found no reason to leave the immediate grounds for our long week-end celebrating our 4th anniversary. Thank you so much it was just what we needed.
